Little Moments

A six year old girl is talking about getting married and her mother says, "Well I hope you wait awhile until you find the right one." Her daughter exclaims, "Oh don't worry mom. I'm not going to marry anyone who doesn't love God!"

Another young girl is leading the group in prayer. She prays for just about everyone you could think of and ends with a fairly classic "song of praise" to God for all that has been done through Jesus.

About the same breath she uses to say "amen" another child uses to exclaim, "Hey, great prayer!"

Competition - don't knock it. I was having a hard time getting the third grade children in Vacation Church School to pay attention as I told them a Bible story. Then I introduced the challenge… divided into two teams, the team that remembers most gets a Lifesaver for each child.

It was like night turned to day. They listened. They interrupted to make me repeat. They remembered!

I learned many Bible facts and Bible verses through playing games. We played Bible Lotto and Bible Basketball and did so for a good many years on of my childhood and early teens.

(Another added) Well our teacher once got a game called Bible Baseball and made us play it a couple of Sundays but one Sunday she went to get our juice refreshment and that game disappeared and could never be found!

We had a Christmas play that had some kids in the cast who were not regular in Sunday School. The performance was enlivened, one might say, by the little boy who said boldly, if somewhat incorrectly, "Hell, Mary, full of grace..."

I've been involved in amateur drama groups ever since my big moment as a child. We were putting on a play under the direction of the local chapter of the WCTU. All I remember about the play is that I was in the role of the daughter of a drinking father and was to show our family distress by bursting into tears. I practiced crying and in the play was able to burst into tears with real tears and real sobs. People were so impressed they commented on my acting ability and I was hooked for life!

As you know, there is a Damascus here in our county. I knew I had the right answer when in our Bible geography lesson the question was asked, "Now, who knows where Damascus is?" and I piped up, "Its about 17 miles from Culver City." My answer was greeted with laughter!

I recall two things from my early days in Sunday School. One, since we didn't have lighting in the church, I remember an elderly woman reading the Bible lesson while standing at the window where there was light.

And I remember being given 25 cents a week and being trusted as a young boy to be the one who went in early to fire up the stove on cold days. The confidence they had in me for that job made a deep impression.
